ONE DAY SURGICAL ABORTIONS

WHAT METHOD IS USED?

Vacuum aspiration is typically used in abortions up through the 15th week.

WHAT IS VACUUM ASPIRATION?

VA is performed with the use of a cannula and a source of suction for removing uterine contents.  The procedure time is typically under 15 minutes.  Analgesics (such as ibuprofen) and local anesthesia are sufficient to manage pain, although pain may increase with gestational age.  Sedation through an IV is optional to decrease pain.

HOW EFFECTIVE IS VA?

VA successfully ends first trimester pregnancies 99% of the time. For the 1% times the procedure fails, it is repeated.

HOW IS VA DIFFERENT FROM OTHER EARLY ABORTION TECHNIQUES?

Compared with a medical abortion, VA reported success rates are higher, the procedure is shorter and completed in a predictable period, fewer office visits are needed.

HOW SAFE IS VA?

Research has proven over and over that first trimester abortion is extremely safe. It has no long term risks such as infertility, ectopic pregnancy, or birth defects. There is no association between abortion and breast cancer. When facing an unplanned pregnancy, there are no greater mental health issues in women who choose abortion than in those who carry the pregnancy to term.

Common side effects include abdominal cramping or pain and bleeding, and possibly nausea and sweating. Women may also experience spotting for two to six weeks following the procedure.  Complications are very rare, but can include uterine or cervical perforation, pelvic infection and excess bleeding. Patients will be educated on warning signs of complications and encouraged to contact us immediately if symptoms develop.
