MEDICAL ABORTION
The Abortion Pill
The Abortion Pill (Mifeprex, mifepristone or RU 486, commonly known as the French Abortion Pill)
This is a non-surgical abortion that’s safe and less risky (but less effective) than a surgical abortion. With this method of abortion, you receive a tablet of Mifeprex (RU 486). It “unhooks” the pregnancy from the uterine wall and begins the abortion process.
Women receive pills, misoprostol (“miss o pross tul”) to take home with them. Once the first medication has had a chance to work, the misoprostol causes uterine contractions and usually produces a miscarriage. Once the abortion is started, the process must be completed
Women must be very early in a pregnancy for the medical abortion procedure. The abortion is not complete until the ultrasound on the final visit. If the medical abortion fails, a physician will determine whether to give more misoprostol pills or to perform a surgical abortion. There is no additional charge for either.
Important: these medications cause serious fetal deformities and the abortion must be completed.
